Overview

Tsuboe no Gokujou Oroshigane Maruzara / Tsuboe no Gokujou Oroshigane Kakuzara

Following Tsuboe no Gokujou Oroshigane Hako-hako-, I was responsible for the brand direction and design of
Tsuboe no Gokujou Oroshigane Maruzara and Tsuboe no Gokujou Oroshigane Kakuzara.

Drawing on Tsuboe’s long history and refined metalworking techniques, these products reimagine the act of grating condiments as a graceful experience in itself.
Each form was derived from the movement and characteristics of the ingredients.

Maruzara takes its circular shape from the motion of grating wasabi in smooth, circular strokes.
Its radially arranged blades create a delicate texture and a gentle aroma as the wasabi is ground.
Kakuzara, by contrast, adopts a square form inspired by the diagonal, linear motion used when grating ginger.
The direction, density, and angle of each blade were precisely designed to ensure stability, control, and efficiency.

Both designs go beyond functionality to express a complete tactile and visual experience — from the weight and balance of the tool to its refined form.
The soft contrast between the matte stainless steel and the ceramic dish or silicone lid brings a quiet sophistication to the tabletop.
Rather than being used at the kitchen counter, these graters are designed to be used directly at the table — creating a moment of beauty in the act itself.
